CABLE TRAILER

Point Engineering was contracted to design a trailer for the purpose of laying high voltage power cable into pre-dug trenches as part of the construction and integration of wind and solar farms into the electrical grid.

  • The trailers were designed to be hitched in a three-car configuration, with each trailer responsible for laying cable for a single power phase. The primary functions of the trailer are:

    1. Open the tailgate to allow the trailer to reverse over the cable drum and align with the lifting cradle.

    2. Lift the cable drum to operational height.

    3. Engage the drive rollers to unspool cable from the drum towards the front the trailer.

    4. Feed the cable through rollers mounted to the external arm (left or right) which direct the cable downwards towards the trench.

    5. In the three-car configuration, the two rearmost trailers feed their cables to the front trailer and through the external arm.

Each trailer is capable of handling cable drums up to 4 m diameter and weighing up to 16 t.

  • Point Engineering was responsible for the mechanical design and drafting of the trailers. Support was also provided during manufacturing. The hydraulic circuit and electrical control system design were by others.
